The New National Library of the Czech Republic
Competition, with Zack Cooley, September 2006, Prague, Czech Republic
Based on the programatic requirements - 50% of space for book storage and 50% for ‘everything else’, the library is designed as two interdependent loops - one for storage of books, the other for supporting programs. Holding almost 9 million volumes, the book loop is articulated as solid, manifesting the presence of primary sources. The public loop is transparent allowing views to and from the city. The building is anchored by a central enclosed courtyard, allowing for light as well as dramatic vistas through the space.
